RESIDENT EVIL Posters and Featurette Offer a Glimpse at Zach Cregger’s Ambitious Vision
Sony has dropped two new posters and a fresh featurette for Resident Evil, giving fans another taste of what director Zach Cregger is cooking up with his reimagining of the legendary horror franchise.
The movie hits theaters and IMAX on September 18, and it’s being described as “a thrilling — and terrifying — reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise,” and while fans may recognize the DNA of the games all over it, this isn’t a direct adaptation of any one title.
Instead, Cregger is aiming to capture the feeling of playing a Resident Evil game. That creeping tension. The panic when everything spirals out of control. The sense that every hallway could be your last.
The story centers on Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, a medical courier whose routine night turns into a waking nightmare. He suddenly finds himself trapped in a nonstop fight to stay alive as a horrifying chain of events tears through the city around him.
Joining Abrams in the cast are Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser, and Johnno Wilson. Cregger directed the film from a script he co-wrote with Shay Hatten, whose previous credits include John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4.
One of the more interesting reveals came from Cregger himself during a recent trailer breakdown where he explained exactly how he sees this story fitting into the larger Resident Evil universe. He said:
“My rule for this movie was to try and make a movie that felt like my experience of playing the games, and that could live in the world of Resident Evil.
“I feel like this movie takes place alongside the events of Resident Evil 2. I like to think that everything that’s going on in the police station could be happening in this world. This is just another dude on another mission on the other side of town.”
That approach honestly feels like a smart move. Instead of retelling a story fans already know beat for beat, the movie appears to be carving out its own terrifying corner of the outbreak while still existing in the shadow of Resident Evil 2. It gives the filmmakers room to surprise audiences while still delivering the atmosphere fans want.
The featurette also offers some new footage and a better look at the grim tone Cregger is chasing. Everything feels dirty, desperate, and dangerous.
After the success of Weapons, horror fans have been curious to see what Cregger would do with a franchise like Resident Evil, and so far this movie looks like it could deliver the kind of nerve-rattling survival horror experience fans have wanted to see from the franchise on the big screen.
