New RICK AND MORTY Voice Actors Address Criticisms

With Rick and Morty Season 7 came the introduction of new voices behind the main characters Rick and Morty, who were previously voiced by Justin Roiland. I think they’re doing a good job with the characters, but there have been some harsh fans out there criticizing the voice actors, and those who want Roiland to come back. I think it’s pretty clear by now that Roiland will not be invited back.

Ian Cardoni is now the voice actor behind Rick Sanchez and Harry Belden is taking on the role of Morty Smith. These actors have now opened up about playing these characters and the criticisms they face. During an interview with THR, they explained that they are really just trying to avoid reading any of the comments online and are just focusing on giving the best possible performances they can deliver. They are their own worst critics.

Cardoni said: "I try to avoid that. My focus has been on doing the best voice I can. I avoid going down any rabbit holes online. As a fan, I know this show touches people worldwide, and the characters mean a lot to the fans. I share that love of the show and care for the character. Wanting to be my best Rick is with me every time I record."

Belden shared the same sentiment, saying: "I'm not allowed to look at the online comments. My girlfriend won't let me. So, I've had blinders on through this whole process. I completely understand people being nervous. Change is scary, especially with something so iconic that many people love. But nobody is going to be a harsher critic than yourself. So, I'm striving to be the best Morty I can be. If I start zeroing in on tiny little aspects of my voice, I'm going to drive myself crazy. I leave it to [showrunner Scott Marder] and [producer] Steve Levy to tell me if something sounds off, and then I work on it."

You’ve got to remember, these guys were hired to voice these characters after the producer went through an extensive search for the right actors to replace Roiland. They really seem like they’re dedicated to this and putting in the work and effort to bring these characters to life for us. I’m fine with the new voices, but what are your thoughts?
