New Rumor Claims Aubrey Plaza Will Return to the Role of Rio Vidal/Lady Death in the MCU

A new rumor is floating around pertaining to Aubrey Plaza’s future in the MCU. The actress appeared in the Disney+ series Agatha All Along, starring opposite Kathryn Hahn’s title character as the witch Rio Vidal, who was later revealed to be Lady Death. The character was a roadblock for Agatha, as the story revealed their past relationship, and their complicated entanglement.

Death was ultimately defeated in the final episode when Agatha Harkness sacrificed herself to save Billy Maximoff. Agatha kissed Death, allowing Death to take her, but Billy is spared because he will be reincarnated. Agatha reappeared as a ghost, haunted by Billy, who she walked away with, and viewers were left to assume that Plaza’s Death was gone for good. But this is Marvel, and anything is possible.

Now a new rumor claims Plaza will be back. The report originates from Lizzie Hill’s April 2025 Q&A on The Cosmic Circus (via SuperHeroHype), where she stated, “We’ve heard she’ll be back,” when asked about Plaza’s character Rio Vidal and her potential return after the Disney+ series finale.

Despite her on-screen demise, Marvel reportedly plans to bring the character back, although it hasn’t officially confirmed anything. Rumors from September 2024 first suggested Marvel was considering Plaza’s return, with insider Daniel Richtman stating that she “will appear in more Marvel projects” (via Patreon).

While the report didn’t specify which titles she may join or whether her appearances would remain limited to Disney+, Plaza’s earlier comments calling her role “really pivotal” support the idea that Rio Vidal could have a larger impact on the MCU moving forward (via GQ).

In Agatha All Along, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) led a coven on a mystical journey along the Witches Road. Teen (Joe Locke), later revealed as Billy Maximoff, confronted and defeated Death in a climactic battle. The finale ended with Agatha surrendering her physical form and becoming a spectral guide, setting up a potential sequel focused on Billy’s search for his twin brother, Tommy.

Hill’s comment supports ongoing speculation that Plaza could return in a follow-up series involving Agatha and Billy. Marvel Studios has also started filming Vision Quest, a series centered on Vision. Since Billy and Tommy are Vision’s sons in MCU canon, a crossover or Death’s reappearance in this storyline remains possible.
