DOCTOR STRANGE 3 Reportedly in Early Development and Benedict Cumberbatch Has a Director In Mind

The 2022 sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness left off with some intriguing threads that gave fans an idea of where we might see the Sorcerer Supreme’s story headed, and with who.

But as the MCU preps for its next big event films, Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars, we haven’t heard whether Stephen Strange will be a part of that journey. It’s likely his participation is being kept a secret, but we will just have to wait and see.

All we know is that whether in an Avengers pic, or a solo sequel, we are likely to hear something about the character’s next project eventually. His world within the MCU is a fascinating one, and his journey has not ended.

If a new rumor is true, Doctor Strange 3 is in the works, and its star, Benedict Cumberbatch, has a great idea for who should direct.

Nexus Point News says they’ve heard from sources that the threequel “is in active early development.” The report goes on to say that Cumberbatch is becoming more involved behind the scenes this time around, particularly in the search for a new writer and director.

One name Cumberbatch is said to be interested in is Sam Mendes, the visionary filmmaker behind Cabaret, American Beauty, Revolutionary Road, Away We Go, Skyfall, Spectre, and 1917.

Mendes has never made a superhero movie, or delved into the dark territory of horror, like the directors of the first two Doctor Strange films.

But it seems as though the biggest hurdle to landing Mendes would be the four Beatles biopics he is currently working on that won’t be released until 2028.

The third film isn’t expected to begin production until after Avengers: Secret Wars has finished filming, but that still seems like it wouldn’t be in the right timeline for Mendes to come aboard. We will just have to wait and see how it all shakes out. Who would you like to see take on Doctor Strange 3?
