New SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Movie Promo Images Show Us The Character's Updated Look
Thanks to some leaked promo images, we have our first real look at what Sonic will look like in the upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog movie.
A lot of fans weren’t happy with the initial poster for the film that showed off Sonic’s hairy legs. Now fans are going off on this latest reveal. I’m not sure what fans are expecting, but it looks like a silly weird blue cartoon hedgehog. I don’t think there’s really any good way to bring this character to life in the real world.
The story for the movie is said to be “a bit of a fish -- or hedgehog -- out of water” kind of story. The hedgehog, who will be voiced by Ben Schwartz, “finds himself in our present-day world, wherein he develops a relationship with James Marsden's Tom Wachowski and also finds himself at odds with Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik. As expected, mayhem ensues.”
It was explained that the creative team behind the film wanted to go with a “more realistic take on Sonic -- down to his updated new kicks -- than the more cartoony version we've seen in the past.”
When previously talking about the character’s fur, executive producer Tim Miller (Deadpool) said:
“That was always Stage 1 of adapting it to what the real world is and what a real animal would be like. It would be weird and it would feel like he was running around nude if he was some sort of otter-like thing. It was always, for us, fur, and we never considered anything different. It’s part of what integrates him into the real world and makes him a real creature.”
Miller went on to talk about bringing Sonic to life in the real world saying:
“I don’t think SEGA was entirely happy with the eye decision, but these sorts of things you go, ‘It’s going to look weird if we don’t do this.’ But everything is a discussion, and that’s kind of the goal, which is to only change what’s necessary and stay true to the rest of it. He’s not going to feel like a Pixar character would because I don’t think that’s the right aesthetic to make it feel like part of our world.”
I’m a big fan of Sonic The Hedgehog. Like many of you, I grew up playing the video games. While I hope that the movie is good, I’m not expecting much and I’m not really excited about seeing it at this point.
Sonic The Hedgehog will hit theaters on November 8th, 2019.
