New STAR TREK Film Coming From The DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Filmmakers
The Star Trek universe is setting a new course, and this time, it’s in the hands of the creative duo behind Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley have officially been hired by Paramount Pictures to write, produce, and direct a completely new Star Trek film, one that’s not tied to any previous movies, series, or development projects.
According to Deadline, the upcoming project will be “a completely new take in the Star Trek universe and is not connected to any previous or current television series, movie, or prior movie development projects.”
That means we’re in for a fresh story, with the potential for an entirely new crew and characters, a true reboot of the franchise for a new generation.
For longtime fans, this news might feel like the first glimmer of hope in a turbulent decade for Star Trek on the big screen. After 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, Paramount’s plans for a follow-up with Chris Pine, Zoe Saldaña, and Zachary Quinto went through countless iterations.
Projects came and went, and one of them included an R-rated pitch from Quentin Tarantino. Another come from Noah Hawley, and there were even talks of a Starfleet prequel, but none ever got off the ground.
Meanwhile, the franchise thrived on streaming, with shows like Picard and Strange New Worlds reigniting excitement among fans. Now, with Goldstein and Daley onboard, it finally feels like that warp drive is powering back up.
These two filmmakers have proven they can handle major franchises with humor, intelligence, and heart. Their work on Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves showed their knack for blending sharp writing with genre-savvy fun.
They also co-wrote Spider-Man: Homecoming, helping kick off the Tom Holland era of the MCU. Their upcoming film Mayday, due next year, reportedly continues their streak of mixing action, comedy, and creativity in unexpected ways.
It’s honestly perfect that Daley is now stepping into the Star Trek universe. I like the idea that the geeky kid from that cult classic series Freaks & Geeks grew up to direct Dungeons & Dragons and now Star Trek.
If Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves proved anything, it’s that Goldstein and Daley know how to take a beloved franchise and turn it into some really awesome and fun. If they can bring that same charm and balance of adventure, humor, and heart to Star Trek, we might be looking at the next great cinematic voyage for the final frontier.
