New THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT Movie Sets September 2027 Theatrical Release Date

Lionsgate has officially announced that its upcoming The Blair Witch Project movie is headed to theaters, bringing the iconic found footage horror franchise back from the shadows. The next chapter in the Blair Witch saga is set to arrive on September 24, 2027.

The announcement came with a cryptic teaser video that doesn't reveal much, but it certainly accomplishes what it set out to do: reminding horror fans that the legend of the Blair Witch is far from finished.

This latest installment will be directed by Dylan Clark, a filmmaker whose rise has been one of the more interesting stories in modern horror. Clark first grabbed attention online with his viral horror short Portrait of God, which quickly became a favorite among genre fans.

The short impressed enough people in Hollywood that it's now being developed into a feature film with Jordan Peele and Sam Raimi producing. Clark is also attached to write and direct a feature adaptation of his short film Story Time.

For many horror fans, one of the most encouraging aspects of this new project is the involvement of the people who helped make the original 1999 phenomenon a cultural landmark.

Original filmmakers Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick, producer Gregg Hale, and stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams are all on board as executive producers.

The screenplay comes from Chris Thomas Devlin, while the producing team includes Blumhouse's Jason Blum, Atomic Monster's James Wan, Roy Lee, and Divide/Conquer's Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath.

Wan previously spoke about the importance of bringing the original creative team into the fold, explaining: “Getting all the original people that were involved in the original Blair Witch, getting their blessing and getting them involved. That was very important for all of us. We wanted to pay respect to the legacy of it all.”

Honoring the franchise's roots will likely be welcome news for longtime fans. The original The Blair Witch Project completely changed the horror landscape when it arrived in 1999, turning a micro-budget production into a global sensation and helping popularize the found footage format for an entire generation of filmmakers.

While story details remain locked away in the woods for now, the official press release offers a tease of what's to come:

“The horror masterminds at Blumhouse Atomic Monster (Obsession, The Conjuring, Backrooms) remind us how scary the woods can be with this groundbreaking new chapter of The Blair Witch Project.”

With Blumhouse and Atomic Monster joining forces, the original creators lending their support, and an emerging horror filmmaker taking the reins, this new take on The Blair Witch Project has assembled an impressive team.

Whether it expands the mythology, reinvents the found footage formula, or takes the franchise in a completely unexpected direction, horror fans will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on what emerges from the forest over the next couple of years.

For now, all we know for certain is that the Blair Witch is making her return, and she'll be waiting in theaters on September 24, 2027.
