New THE LORD OF THE RINGS Prequel Video Game Will Tell The Untold Story of Gollum
There’s a new video game in development that will be set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth and it’s called The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. As you can see by the title, the movie will focus on the iconic character Gollum.
The game is being developed by Daedalic Entertainment and according to them, the narrative adventure game will explore the origin story of Gollum. The game will operate within the same timeframe as The Lord of the Rings saga and GamesBeat talked to Daedalic’s Cartsen Fichtelman about the game, who explained that the game “follows the path of Gollum and what happens before Frodo and his companions find him trailing them in the Mines of Moria.”
“We’ll tell his story until he first shows up. Sometimes they mention some things that happen to Gollum, but nobody knows exactly what happened. That’s our task, explaining what exactly happened there.”
That sounds like a fantastic and ambitious project. It will also be a fascinating story to tell. When talking about the character in the game, Fichtelman explains:
“When you play Gollum, you’ll play Sméagol at the same time. You need to make some decisions, maybe some decisions that are more or less from Sméagol, and some that are from Gollum. You can decide for yourself what you’d like to see more. When you decide some things, it could be—this is reflected in the mechanics. The game forces you to convince yourself and find one of these two positions. When it comes to other iconic characters in the universe, in Middle-earth, we’ll see what happens around Gollum.”
In a separate interview with Den of Geek, it explained that this will not be the Gollum from the Peter Jackson films. Don’t expect that Gollum because you won’t be familiar with the look of this new character design. It’s explained:
“I think when you see [the video game version of] Gollum for the first time, I think you will say ‘yep, that's Gollum. Maybe you also could say, 'this is not the Gollum we know from the Warner movies.’”
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be an action-adventure and it will be the first game in a series of games they plan on releasing. It’s set to be released on all relevant platforms at some time in 2021.
