New THUNDERBOLTS* Image Features US Congressman Bucky Barnes

Marvel’s Thunderbolts* is shaping up to be one of the most interesting and exciting entries in the MCU, and a newly released image reveals a surprising development, Bucky Barnes, aka The Winter Soldier, is now a U.S. Congressman.

Yep, the former assassin and longtime Avenger has traded in covert ops for Capitol Hill.

The film also features the return Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

So what exactly brings these characters together? According to the official synopsis: “In Thunderbolts, Marvel Studios assembles an unconventional team of antiheroes — Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker.

“After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts. Will this dysfunctional group tear themselves apart or find redemption and unite as something much more before it’s too late?”

After everything Bucky has been through with brainwashing, decades as a Hydra assassin, and struggling to redeem himself, seeing him take on a leadership position in the U.S. government is a fun arc for him. It will be interesting to see what his agenda is.

Thunderbolts* was directed by Jake Schreier, whose past credits include Robot & Frank, Paper Towns, and episodes of Beef and Skeleton Crew. Newcomers to the cast include Lewis Pullman as Bob/Sentry and Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel.

Thunderbolts* will be released in United States theaters on May 2, 2025
