New Trailer and Details Released for POKEMON SCARLET and POKEMON VIOLET
Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet are almost here, and The Pokémon Company has released a new trailer for the game. The trailer shows a bunch of moments throughout the game, especially with Tera Battles, plus there are some new Pokémon shown off. The trailer is set to Ed Sheeran’s “Celestial” which is very catchy and upbeat, very appropriate for a Pokémon game. In addition to the trailer though, we did get some important details.
First, we have the Scarlet Book and the Violet Book which will appear in their respective versions of the game. These books are expedition records from long ago claiming to have gone into an uncharted area of the Paldea region. It’s unclear whether the books are true or not, but inside are photos and sketches of unidentified creatures. In particular, the Scarlet Book as information regarding a creature known as Great Tusk. Meanwhile, the Violet Book tells of a creature known as Iron Treads. Both of them look like they could potentially be related to Donphan.
The Monster Known as Great Tusk
The Scarlet Book describes how this savage monster attacked the expedition team with its large body and tusks, mortally wounding one of the explorers.
The Monster Known as Iron Treads
It is said in the Violet Book that when this monster curls its body and rolls to attack, it leaves a trail gouged into the ground, as if it had scorched the earth.
Next, information was provided about some black crystals that trainers may find as they adventure in Paldea. These crystals look different from the standard ones that initiate Tera Raid Battles and trigger Tera Raid Battles with much stronger Pokémon yielding exciting rewards. You’ll want to hurry if you see one though as they are only available for a limited time. One black crystal Tera Raid Battle will be available between December 1-4 and December 15-18 with a Charizard that has a Dragon Tera Type. This is of special note because Charizard is not normally in Paldea. In order to participate in black crystal Tera Raid Battles, players will need to complete certain postgame events or join others via a Link Code. I guess this adds incentive to get the game when it launches.
There will be other Tera Raid Battle events though, even at crystals that look ordinary but have a mysterious aura. The first of these events will be the Eevee Spotlight running from November 24-27 when Eevee with a variety of Tera Types will appear more frequently in Tera Raid Battles.
Another new Pokémon was recently revealed named Gimmighoul. This little guy has two forms (Chest and Roaming) and a love for coins.
Gimmighoul (Chest Form)
These Gimmighoul hide inside sturdy treasure chests. While this provides them with a solid defense, the treasure chest’s weight causes Gimmighoul to move slowly, making travel difficult. It is not uncommon for Chest Form Gimmighoul to be mistaken for an antique and taken home or sold to an antique store.
When Gimmighoul senses a person or Pokémon drawing near, it ambushes them. It then uses ghost energy to control its target, forcing them to collect coins. Because it often hides in warehouses, shop corners, and other places that people and Pokémon don’t frequent, it tends to keep persistent control of those it manages to encounter.
Gimmighoul (Roaming Form)
This kind of Gimmighoul doesn’t hide in a treasure chest. It’s small, carries a single coin on its back, and can be found hiding all over Paldea. However, since they run away as soon as a person approaches, it seems not a single Trainer in Paldea has ever managed to catch one.
Category: Coin Chest Pokémon
Type: Ghost
Height: 1' (0.3 m)
Weight: 11 lbs. (5.0 kg)
Ability: Rattled
But wait, there’s more. There will be compatibility for Scarlet and Violet within Pokémon Home starting Spring 2023. This will allow all Pokémon from the new games to be stored in Pokémon Home and select Pokémon from previous games to be brought to Paldea. That being said, Battle Stadium statistics will be available soon for Scarlet and Violet in the mobile version of Pokémon Home. In addition, if you link Scarlet and Violet to Pokémon Go, you’ll receive a Roaming Gimmighoul in Pokémon Go.
If Scarlet and Violet are not the first Pokémon games you’ve played on the Switch, you can also get Rotom Phone cases in-game. Of course, not every Switch game is applicable, but if you have save data from any of the following games, you’ll get a case that corresponds to the respective game: Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond, Pokémon Shining Pearl, Pokémon Sword, Pokémon Shield, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!, or Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!. Oh and it sounds like the games may involve a reincarnation cycle based on one of the screenshots.
Finally, the team announced that there are planned updates for Scarlet and Violet post-launch. The first update (v. 1.0.1) is set to release on launch day and will enable online play. You might want to download it before playing. This makes it sound like the team is planning quite a bit more for the ninth generation of games. I wonder what new things we can expect to see.
Scarlet and Violet will release on November 18 for the Nintendo Switch. If you haven’t pre-ordered your copy yet, you can do so at the Nintendo eShop or at your favorite retailers including GameStop (affiliate link). Which version are you going to be playing and which starter will you choose?
