New Trailer for THE HUNGER GAMES: SUNRISE ON THE REAPING is a Brutal Return to Panem

The arena is calling again, and this time we’re heading further back into the history of Panem. Lionsgate has officially released a new trailer for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, giving fans a raw look at the Second Quarter Quell and the early days of some very familiar characters.

The studio also confirmed the movie hits theaters on November 20, 2026, so the countdown is officially on.

Set decades before Katniss Everdeen ever volunteered as tribute, the story drops us into a much darker chapter of the Games. The official synopsis explains:

“The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping revisits the world of Panem 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.”

This is the infamous Quarter Quell where the Capitol doubled the number of tributes, making survival even more brutal. At the center of it all is a 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada, long before he became the hardened mentor fans met in the original films portrayed by Woody Harrelson.

The trailer leans into that transformation, teasing the trauma and strategy that will shape him into the man we know.

The trailer also offers a look at some of the younger versions of other iconic characters. Maya Hawke steps into the role of Wiress, offering a glimpse of the victor fans first met in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, originally played by Amanda Plummer.

There’s also Kieran Culkin as a younger Caesar Flickerman, bringing a fresh spin to the eccentric host made famous by Stanley Tucci.

The cast is loaded across the board. Mckenna Grace plays Maysilee Donner, with Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird. Jesse Plemons appears as Plutarch Heavensbee, while Kelvin Harrison Jr. takes on Beetee Latier.

The film also features Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Lili Taylor as Mags Flanagan, Billy Porter as Magno Stift, Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle, and Ralph Fiennes stepping into the role of President Coriolanus Snow.

The movie is directed by Francis Lawrence, who returns to the franchise after helming multiple previous entries, with a screenplay by Billy Ray based on the novel by Suzanne Collins.

This marks the sixth installment in the franchise and the second prequel following The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, which explored the rise of a young Snow during the 10th Hunger Games. Where that film focused on political manipulation and ambition, Sunrise on the Reaping looks far more intense and survival-driven, with the trailer hinting at a vicious, high-stakes arena.

Fans of the series should get ready, because this return to the arena looks like it’s going to be a rough ride.
