New Trailer for the Plane Crash Survival Film SOCIETY OF THE SNOW From Director J.A. Bayona
Netflix has released a new teaser trailer for its upcoming plane-crash survival movie Society of the Snow. The film tells the remarkable true story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed in the Andes on October 13 1972. Only 29 of the 45 passengers survived the crash.
This is one of my worst nightmares. Every time I get on a plane… ugh. This is such a scary situation! Now, I do like survival stories about endurance and perseverance in dangerous environments. When it comes to plan crashes, though, that’s one I hope to never experience.
The film is based on the book of the same name by Pablo Vierci, and the synopsis reads: “In 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which had been chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, crashed in the heart of the Andes. Only 29 of its 45 passengers survived the accident. Trapped in one of the most hostile and inaccessible environments on the planet, they have to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.”
The movie was directed by J.A. Bayona (The Impossible, When a Monster Calls), and he previously talked about why he wanted to take on this project, saying: “I think I’m attracted to these very extreme stories. They might feel dark, but, in the end, they are very optimistic about life. I think that in order to enhance life, sometimes you need to face death. One of the things that I love about Vierci’s book is that he’s able to get you into the minds of the characters. He makes you go through this experience; he puts you in front of death to highlight life. That’s something that you can find in common with The Impossible. It’s a very different story, though, and it’s a very different context. The Impossible happened in 72 hours. This happened in 72 days, and the geography is totally different. One of the things that I think is very special about Society of the Snow is that it happens in a place where life is not possible. You need to reinvent life. You need to reinvent your beliefs. You need to reinvent your link, your bond, with other people.”
The film’s ensemble cast includes Enzo Vogrincic, Agustín Pardella, Matías Recalt, Esteban Bigliardi, Rafael Federman, Fernando Contigiani García, Diego Vegezzi, Esteban Kukuriczka, Francisco Romero, Valentino Alonso, Tomás Wolf, Agustín Della Corte, Felipe Otaño, Andy Pruss, Blas Polidori, Felipe Ramusio, and Simón Hempe.
Netflix will release the film on January 4th, 2024.
