New Updated Drama Series Based on the 90's Classic CLUELESS Shares Little in Common With the Original
A new hour-long drama series is being shopped around the streamers and networks right now that is said to be based on the 90’s gem of a movie Clueless. That movie is one of my favorites. It was funny and timely and it introduced us to America’s sweetheart, Paul Rudd. It totally holds up because the writing was just so good, and the actors were endearing. This new series is said to be an updated version of the story, but it sounds to me like it has nothing to do with the original, except some names and the location.
Here’d the description for the series, given by Deadline:
The new Clueless — a Mean Girls meets Riverdale meets a Lizzo music video — is also set in high school. It is described as a baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sunglasses-wearing, oat milk latté and Adderall-fueled look at what happens when the high school Queen Bee (Cher) disappears and her life-long number two (Dionne) steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans. How does Dionne deal with the pressures of being the new most popular girl in school, while also unraveling the mystery of what happened to her best friend, all in a setting that is uniquely 2020 LA?
The film was light. It was a rom-com with a slight edge. The update makes the story sound like a drug and sex-fueled murder mystery. It may be that this sounds like a bad idea, or it may be that I am getting grumpier as I age, and I don’t want to hear about the things that seem timely to teenagers now because I think they’re annoying and make bad choices. But either way, I am not the target demographic, so they can do whatever they want and we probably won’t intersect. I do wonder why they would tie it to the movie though if the series was going to be so different.
Do you think this sounds like a series you might enjoy?
