New VISIONQUEST Image Reveals the Human Form The Powerful and Dangerous AI EDITH

Vision’s head is about to become a very crowded place.

Marvel Television’s VisionQuest will bring Paul Bettany back as Vision for an eight-episode Disney+ series that closes out the trilogy launched with WandaVision and continued in Agatha All Along.

This time, much of the action will unfold inside Vision’s own mind, where pieces of Tony Stark’s technological legacy have taken on human form.

That includes EDITH, one of Stark’s most powerful and potentially destructive creations, and we now have our first look at Emily Hampshire playing the AI in human form.

New images from Empire Magazine show Hampshire’s EDITH inside Vision’s mindscape. One shot features her sitting on the floor and looking through what appears to be a scrapbook or collection of files.

Another brings several of the AI avatars together, including FRIDAY, played by Orla Brady, DUM-E, played by Henry Lewis, and U, played by Jonathan Sayer.

They’re part of a much larger group of familiar Marvel artificial intelligences inhabiting a mansion constructed from Vision’s memories.

One of the biggest returning characters is Ultron, with James Spader once again playing the murderous AI from Avengers: Age of Ultron. This version of Ultron is trapped inside Vision’s mind palace, which should make for one hell of an awkward reunion considering their history.

James D’Arcy is also returning as JARVIS, while T’Nia Miller will reportedly play Jocasta. Marvel fans will know Jocasta has particularly strong ties to Ultron, who created her to become his bride.

Some of these characters fit naturally into Vision’s mental world. Ultron originally created Vision’s synthetic body as a new form for himself and had already started transferring his consciousness into it.

Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, played by Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo, respectively, eventually uploaded JARVIS into the body instead.

That history means both Ultron and JARVIS being buried somewhere within Vision’s programming makes plenty of sense. Once VisionQuest starts adding other Stark AIs, however, the mystery gets a lot more interesting.

FRIDAY, for example, became Tony’s replacement AI after JARVIS was transformed into Vision. It’s possible Vision encountered FRIDAY while living and working at the Avengers Compound, giving the series a reasonable explanation for why some version of her exists inside his mind.

EDITH is much harder to explain. Tony created EDITH as an independent security and defense system with access to a massive satellite network and an arsenal capable of deploying drone strikes.

After Tony’s death, control of the technology was passed to Peter Parker, played by Tom Holland, and it became a major part of Spider-Man: Far From Home when Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, got his hands on it.

EDITH may have been designed to protect the planet, but the system is incredibly dangerous in the wrong hands. Tony kept control of it restricted until he believed he had found someone capable of responsibly using that power.

Here’s the problem for VisionQuest: EDITH entered the MCU roughly five years after Vision was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.

So how is she inside his head? If the mansion and its residents are made from programs and memories that actually existed within Vision, EDITH shouldn’t be hanging around with Ultron, JARVIS and the rest of the gang.

Her appearance suggests Marvel has another explanation for what Vision’s mindscape actually represents, how it was constructed, or what happened to him after the events of WandaVision.

That question could end up being one of the more interesting parts of the series. Instead of simply revisiting Tony Stark’s collection of AIs, VisionQuest has an opportunity to dig into what Vision has become and just how much information is buried inside his reconstructed consciousness.

Between Ultron, JARVIS, FRIDAY, EDITH, Jocasta and several other digital personalities sharing the same mental real estate, Vision is going to have a lot to sort through.

VisionQuest premieres on Disney+ October 14th.
