New VOLTRON Series and Guillermo del Toro’s TROLLHUNTERS Coming to Netflix

Netflix and DreamWorks Animation have announced that they are expanding their current deal, and there seems to be some pretty cool content coming along with it. Netflix will be the home of several new original series that DreamWorks Animation will develop. Those series include Guillermo del Toro's Trollhunters and a new reimagining of the classic 80s animated series Voltron! The deal also gives Netflix the streaming rights to the DreamWorks Animation feature film library.

When Trollhunters was originally announced, it was supposed to be an animated feature film. It looks like things have changed since it will be a series. Del Toro previously talked about why he was going to take on Trollhunters saying:

"I wanted very much to develop a story that could be written for kids but dealt with a genre that was scary. It essentially combines fairy tales with modern times and is about how difficult it is to be kid. Normally, kids are idealized in animated films. But the growing pains, married with the notion that there is a world right next to us that is completely plagued by creatures of ancient lore, it's thematically fitting with the rest of my stuff."

I'm excited for Trollhunters, and I can't wait to see what Del Toro will do with it. As for this new Voltron series, this is the first I've heard of it. I'm sure we'll get more information on it sometime in the near future. I'm a huge fan of the original Voltron, so I hope that this new reimagining of it will be decent, and be something that the fans will embrace.

Here's some additional information from the press release regarding the deal between Netflix and DreamWorks Animation and what it will entail:

In addition, the deal extends the rights of current original series for kids from the studio available on the service throughout operating Netflix markets as well as expanding to include second window rights for the series everywhere around the world, outside of China. The series include “The Adventures of Puss in Boots,” “Dinotrux” and “Dragons: Race to the Edge,” among others.
Starting in 2016, Netflix will launch several new series from DWA, including a reimagining of Voltron, and the new series, Trollhunters, from master storyteller Guillermo del Toro, who will unleash a new, fantastical world wrapped around two best friends who make a startling discovery beneath their hometown.
Over the term of the new agreement, a number of new original series will be developed and produced by DreamWorks Animation for Netflix, based not only on recent and upcoming feature films from the studio, but also on other classic IP.
“DreamWorks Animation is synonymous with great storytelling that families around the world enjoy,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Series for Netflix. “It’s with great pleasure that we expand on an already successful relationship with DreamWorks Animation to bring more premium kids and family television to Netflix members globally.”
“This agreement adds to the incredible foundation we’ve built together with Netflix over a number of years across both film and television,” said Ann Daly, President of DreamWorks Animation. “We are proud to work closely with Netflix to continue delivering high-quality programming to audiences around the world.”
