New WICKED: FOR GOOD Teaser Trailer - "You Can't Resist This"
Universal Pictures has dropped a brand-new teaser for Wicked: For Good, and it’s stirring up even more excitement for the highly anticipated sequel. This is the second chapter in the two-part movie event, which not only serves as a prequel to the Wizard of Oz, but also revisits key elements of the legendary story.
The first installment was a massive success with both fans and critics, pulling in $744.07 million worldwide. While it didn’t quite hit the billion-dollar mark that some blockbusters reach, it still became the highest-grossing film adaptation of a Broadway musical of all time.
The new teaser brings the spotlight back on friends-turned-enemies Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda, played by Ariana Grande. Now recognized as the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the East, the two reunite after years apart on opposite sides.
The big question is whether their fragile alliance can withstand the manipulations of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, who seems to be pulling strings and recruiting unsuspecting allies for his own plans.
Fans who were teased in first film with a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment of the classic Oz heroes will be thrilled this time around. The teaser gives a fuller look at Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, and yes, Dorothy herself with Toto in tow. Their faces are still mostly hidden.
Rumors suggest that Alisha Weir (Matilda the Musical, Abigail) has been cast as Dorothy, though the studio hasn’t confirmed it yet.
Director Jon M. Chu spoke to Vanity Fair about how these iconic characters will weave into the story:
“That intersection is the place that we were first introduced into Oz. We tread lightly, but try to make more sense of how it impacts our girls and our characters than maybe the show does. We’re delicate. We’re delicate. We’re delicate.”
With this teaser, Universal is clearly setting the stage for a dramatic collision of storylines. The witches, the Wizard, and now Dorothy and her companions are all on a path that feels like it’s building to something epic.
