New WOLF MAN Image and Leigh Whannell Teases Film Is "Straight-Up, Pure Horror"

We’ve got a new image to share with you for Universal Pictures’ Wolf Man movie, and it features Christopher Abbott's character Blake beginning his transformation into a werewolf.

The director of the film, Leigh Whannell, also talked about the movie in an interview with Empire, and he teases that he wants Wolf Man to be “straight-up, pure horror.”

He told Empire: “Upgrade was more sci-fi action. I was watching a lot of domestic thrillers when I wrote The Invisible Man, because I love that genre. [Wolf Man] is me saying, ‘I just wanted to make something that is straight-up, pure horror.’”

Whannell, who also directed The Invisible Man, went on to say: “I think of it as a companion piece to The Invisible Man. I didn’t want this film to be a nostalgic or a retro Wolf Man film in any way.”

So, this is going to be a very different and unique talk on the werewolf mythology. He added: “[I was] actually writing down in my notepad everything that’s been done, and then saying, ‘Okay, that’s the list of what not to do.’

“I’m hoping that you go in and say, ‘Oh wow, I haven’t seen that werewolf movie before,’ when the lights come up.”

In the film, Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, “inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed dead.

“With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte (Julia Garner; Ozark, Inventing Anna), fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger (Matlida Firth; Hullraisers, Coma).

“But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the dead of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter.

“As the night stretches on, however, Blake begins to behave strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable, and Charlotte will be forced to decide whether the terror within their house is more lethal than the danger without.”

The movie is set to be released in January 2025.
