New X-MEN Fan Film Shows Why Rogue And Gambit Are Great Together

A new short X-Men fan film, Uncanny, is a fun and heartfelt film featuring Rogue and Gambit. Written and directed by Kaitlin Cornell Krusoe, the film follows the tumultuous events of the 1995 Rogue limited series. Here’s the official description:

Even though Rogue defeated Bella Donna and Candra, she was unable to save her childhood sweetheart Cody. She retreats into the mountains to protect her friends. But Gambit tracks her down and fights for her to come home. A film exploring vulnerability and intimacy with two superheroes who can’t touch.

Overall I really enjoyed it. Rogue and Gambit are two of my favorite comic book characters and I love the dynamic between them. Gambit always feels really pushy, but at the end of the day he knows Rogue well enough to know when she needs someone who she cannot push away and when to back off. There’s just always been this great give and take between them and this short film does a good job at showing the vulnerability that often gets covered up by banter and bravado. Alexa Cappiello and Charlie Chappell do a good job in playing Rogue and Gambit respectively. I also have to give props to the costuming department for doing a good job of taking the iconic looks and putting them in a more modern and casual style. Also the contacts they found for Gambit were perfect, I didn’t notice them for a minute which I love because it meant that they were subtle, but once you did see them you couldn’t unsee it. The only drawback is something went weird with the sound. I’m not sure how to describe it other than it sounds like there were various microphones around and we were jumping around what different microphones picked up. So sometimes it would get really loud for a second and then back off quickly. Hopefully they can maybe go back and fix whatever happened in the mix in the future. Other than that, I enjoyed it. I really enjoyed how they didn’t actually need to use a lot of CGI to portray powers. Since physical fighting wasn’t the main showcase they didn’t have to do a lot of powers, just a few moments were needed. Also, they need to sell their poster as an art print because it looks great and I would get it. Check out the video below and let me know what you think.
