Nexstar Media Group Says the Average Age of CW Viewers Is 58, and the Internet Has Jokes
In a surprising news story this week, it turns out that The CW has a very different demographic than many of us would have guessed, and the internet is howling about it. In a call that took place on Monday, executives from Nexstar Media Group revealed how they hope to turn the CW into “more of a cost-conscious broadcast network that appeals to a broader audience.” As it turns out, the CW is a lot closer to that goal than anyone might have imagined.
The reality, according to Nexstar President and COO Tom Carter, is that the average CW viewer is 58 years old — which he thinks is why the broadcast network is also the lowest-rated among all five. Since the CW is home to such teen faves as Riverdale, All American and The Flash, news of its 50-something appeal has the internet having a laugh.
Mike Royce, the former EP on One Day at a Time, and creator of the TNT series Men of a Certain Age, which was famously beloved by an older audience, Tweeted:
“I would have laughed if the average age was 40. 58 is true comic genius.” Then added, “After Riverdale, stay tuned for an all new Men of a Certain Age”.
Of course, a major reason for the numbers coming out this way is that most of the teen viewers of these shows opt for streaming the shows rather than tuning in to watch on the channel itself, but it’s still fun to imagine our parents heavily invested in the next season of Riverdale.
