Next-Gen Xbox Rumored for 2026 Launch with Call of Duty as a Day-One Title
A report has surfaced suggesting that Microsoft may be planning to release its next-generation Xbox console as early as 2026.
This alleged system is reportedly called Xbox Prime, and it could potentially launch alongside a new installment of Call of Duty from developer Infinity Ward.
This info comes courtesy of The Ghost of Hope, a prominent leaker in the Call of Duty community, who shared the information on the social media platform X. According to their post:
“I’m hearing that the next Xbox console is still coming in 2026 and will be called ‘Xbox Prime.’ Still unclear if it’s a code name or the actual name. I’ve heard Infinity Ward’s next Call of Duty is still being considered a day one release for this.”
In previously leaked Microsoft documents, it was hinted that the release window would be 2028 for both the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox. So, if this new rumor is true, plans have changed.
It would make sense for Microsoft change things up and shake up the market to gain an edge over Sony after trailing behind the PS5 in this generation’s hardware race.
Launching a new console ahead of its competitors is a strategy that has worked well for Xbox in the past. The Xbox 360’s early release in 2005, a full year ahead of the PlayStation 3, ended up being a huge success, and the 360 ended up being Xbox’s best-selling console to date.
It seems Microsoft could be aiming for a similar head start with Xbox Prime. The Ghost of Hope elaborates on why the move might make sense:
“I know people don’t believe it, but Xbox’s next console being in 2026 is pretty much an open secret within the industry. Seems early, but I think it makes sense with where Xbox is headed.
“Name sounds corny, but it fits if there’s a big push for day-one games on Game Pass right away, and they get a jump on PS6. Big risk but huge rewards if it pays off.”
While the leaker is confident about the timing, they acknowledge uncertainty about Call of Duty 2026’s status as a launch title. They also caution readers to take the information with a grain of salt, as they’ve been unable to fully corroborate the details through other sources.
Alongside the rumored console, there’s talk of significant improvements to the Xbox controller and backward-compatible game performance. These updates suggest Microsoft may be aiming to create a seamless ecosystem where Game Pass continues to play a pivotal role, offering day-one access to blockbuster titles like Call of Duty.
As of now, Microsoft has not addressed these rumors, which isn’t surprising given the company’s usual silence on speculative news, particularly about new hardware. However, if there’s truth to the rumors, it could signal a pivotal moment for Xbox.
