Nickelodeon Doubles Down on SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS and THE PATRICK STAR SHOW With New Season Renewals
Nickelodeon has officially ordered more episodes of its iconic animated franchise, renewing SpongeBob SquarePants and its spinoff The Patrick Star Show for additional seasons.
The move further cements the network's commitment to one of its most successful and enduring properties as the SpongeBob universe continues to expand.
The flagship series, starring Tom Kenny as the endlessly optimistic sponge, has been renewed for Cycle 16. That renewal covers Seasons 18 and 19 and will consist of 26 half-hour episodes in total.
Meanwhile, The Patrick Star Show, led by Bill Fagerbakke, has secured Cycle 4, which includes Seasons 6 and 7 with 26 half-hour episodes altogether.
Fans won't have to wait too long to see the next chapter unfold. Season 18 of SpongeBob SquarePants and Season 6 of The Patrick Star Show are currently slated to premiere on Nickelodeon in the fourth quarter of 2026. The following seasons, Season 19 of SpongeBob and Season 7 of Patrick Star, are expected to arrive in 2027.
All four newly ordered seasons are already in production, ensuring a steady stream of adventures from Bikini Bottom and beyond for years to come.
The renewals continue a trend that's become increasingly clear at Nickelodeon. Just last month, the network also handed out additional season orders to PAW Patrol and its spinoff Rubble & Crew. Those pickups added 26 more episodes to each series, bringing PAW Patrol to Seasons 14 and 15 and Rubble & Crew to Seasons 5 and 6.
At the same time, Nickelodeon has also been trimming parts of its animation lineup. Late last year, the network canceled Dora and Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, signaling a more franchise-focused strategy moving forward.
Chair George Cheeks outlined that vision in a company memo last November, saying: “Our cable brands will focus on a more curated slate, optimizing programming and marketing resources to amplify what resonates most.
“That means leaning into franchises like SpongeBob, PAW Patrol, RuPaul’s Drag Race, South Park, Ms. Pat and The Daily Show, while continuing to develop new IP across our studios and seeking new ways to amplify and connect with audiences.”
Considering the lengthy production schedules involved with animated series, it's likely these new SpongeBob and Patrick Star cycles had already been in development before that strategy was publicly outlined. Still, the renewals are a clear sign that Nickelodeon sees plenty of life left in the franchise.
For a series that first premiered more than 25 years ago, SpongeBob SquarePants continues to be one of the biggest brands in children's entertainment. Whether it's through the main series, spinoffs, movies, merchandise, or streaming content, the world created by Stephen Hillenburg remains a major force for Nickelodeon.
In the meantime, fans can catch new episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants every Friday at 5 p.m. on Nickelodeon, with The Patrick Star Show following at 6 p.m. The current rollout of new episodes is expected to continue through July and August.
If there was any doubt about Nickelodeon's priorities, this latest round of renewals makes things pretty clear. Bikini Bottom remains one of the network's most valuable destinations, and SpongeBob and Patrick are sticking around for plenty more adventures.
