Nicolas Cage Says Amazon Shelved Its TIGER KING Project

As you know, Nicolas Cage was set to take on the role of Joe Exotic in a Tiger King series being developed at Amazon. Cage would have been awesome in the role, but he’s no longer attached to star in the series because, well… Amazon shelved the project.

The series would have been inspired by the Netflix docu-series Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, and while the project may be shopped to other networks, according to Cage, the reason the series was shelved was because the streaming service felt that it was no longer relevant.

Cage explained, “We should clear the record. I read two excellent scripts, which I did think were excellent, but I think Amazon ultimately felt that it was material that had become past tense because it took so long for it come together. They felt at one point that it was lightning in a bottle, but that point has since faded into the distance and it’s no longer relevant.”

I agree with that. The Tiger King hype is dead now, and I don’t think people are interested in that story anymore. At least, I’m not. If you are interested in seeing a dramatization, you’ll be happy to hear that the other Tiger King series being produced by Peacock with Kate McKinnon and John Cameron Mitchell attached to star is still moving forward.

As for Cage, he’s going got work to keep him busy. He’s set to star in a new film titled The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, in which he will play himself. That story follows Cage as Cage, “a cash-strapped actor who agrees to make a paid appearance at a billionaire super fan’s birthday party as part of an elaborate CIA sting operation.

When talking about the upcoming project, Cage said, “It was absolutely terrifying and I’m one of those folks that thinks that within reason if it’s something that terrifies you or you are afraid of, as long as it doesn’t hurt you or someone else, that’s the very thing you should reach out towards. I’d never done a meta movie about myself before. But [the character] really isn’t me. It’s Tom’s version of me, which is a kind of anxiety-ridden, completely hyperactive version of this person named Nicolas Cage or Nic Cage or Nicky Cage.”

What do you all think about Amazon canceling their Tiger King project?
