Nicolas Cage Talks About the Disappointing Aspects of His Superman Cameo in THE FLASH
Nicolas Cage has spoken out a few times in response to his cameo in The Flash, in which he finally got to play his version of Superman from the unrealized film Superman Lives, which was in development back in 1998. Kevin Smith penned the script for the story, and Tim Burton was signed on as director, but the film never made it to the big screen, so it was cool to finally get to see Cage in the role.
The actor previously told USA Today just after the release of the film that despite the scene being a “blink and you miss it” situation, he also said, “For me, it was the feeling of being actualized. Even that look for that particular character, finally seeing it on screen, was satisfying. But as I said, it's quick.” But now that we are further out, Cage has more to say about the portrayal.
In an interview with Wired, Cage said:
"You said it perfectly when you said, 'We made an agreement.' That is the linchpin to it. There’s an agreement and a mutual understanding and a contract that you’ve gone into knowing both sides and knowing full well what we’re getting into. I’m not saying they used AI on the Superman thing. Maybe they did. I don’t know. Maybe it was just CGI, but whatever it was, that’s not what I did on the set. As much as I love [director] Andy [Muschietti] and [sister and film producer] Barbara [Muschietti]—and I do think they’re great—it’s still not what I was told to do on set."
That’s a real bummer that Cage didn’t feel like he had all the information going into the scene. It was fun for audiences to see, but if he was misled, that’s a shame. I can imagine how frustrating that must feel.
