Nicolas Cage Wants His Own DRACULA Movie to Explore "The Psyche of the Character"
Nicolas Cage is making his big and exciting debut as Dracula in Universal Pictures’ upcoming horror comedy Renfield, which looks like a blast. When it was first announced that Cage would be playing the Dark Prince, fans were super excited and curious to see what he would bring to the character, and from what little we’ve seen so far he’s going to give a memorable performance.
Dracula isn’t the main character of this movie, he’s more of a supporting role. But, after getting a little taste of playing Dracula, Cage wants the opportunity to expand on that with his own Dracula movie so that he can better explore the psyche of the vampire. While talking to Total Film, he explained:
“You know, there are some minor moments here where you get to see some of the pathos in Dracula’s eyes. That made me think that maybe one day I might like to try for a whole movie where you’re really understanding the psyche of the character. I didn’t really have the time to delve into that here.”
I have no doubt that fans would love to see Cage get his own standalone Dracula movie! Cage explained that he accepted the role of Dracula as a challenge to himself and because he is a fan of other interpretations of the character that we’ve seen over the years from the likes of Christopher Lee, Frank Langella, Bela Lugosi and Gary Oldman. He said:
“I also kind of always knew I had to do it at some point. I went back to Christopher Lee, in terms of his manner of speaking, but that was really only a starting point. I knew Christopher. I did a small scene with him in ‘Season of the Witch,’ and I liked him very much. We had a lot of nice conversations, and he reminded me quite a bit of my father, August. So from then on, my dad sort of became the main inspiration for me.”
The movie also stars Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men franchise) as Dracula’s loyal servant, Renfield. It was directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War, The LEGO Batman Movie) from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley (Ghosted series, Rick & Morty series), based on an original idea by The Walking Dead and Invincible creator Robert Kirkman. Here’s the synopsis:
Evil doesn’t span eternity without a little help.
In this modern monster tale of Dracula’s loyal servant, Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men franchise) stars as Renfield, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss, Dracula (Oscar® winner Nicolas Cage). Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency.
The film co-stars Awkwafina (The Farewell, Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings), Ben Schwartz (Sonic, The Afterparty), and Adrian Martinez (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Focus).
Renfield hits theaters on April 14th, 2023. Would you like to see Cage get his own Dracula movie?
