NINJA SCROLL Is Slashing Back Into Theaters This October in a Stunning 4K Restoration

Anime fans are getting the chance to experience one of the medium's most influential action epics the way it was meant to be seen.

The classic 1993 anime film Ninja Scroll is returning to theaters this fall for a special limited engagement, giving longtime fans and newcomers alike an opportunity to watch the legendary samurai adventure on the big screen once again.

I remember discovering this film in high school, and it completely blew my mind! I had never seen anything like it before. Now, I’m finally going to get the chance to watch it on the big screen!

According to IGN, Iconic Events and AMC Theatres are partnering for the re-release, which will take place on October 4, 5, and 7 across North America. The theatrical event will showcase a newly restored version of the film created from its original 35mm negatives and presented in 4K.

The restoration process reportedly “repairs any damage and [performs] color correction to create an archival-quality digital master of the film,” offering what should be the best-looking version of Ninja Scroll fans have ever seen.

Written and directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri and produced by Animate Film, Ninja Scroll follows wandering swordsman Kibagami Jubei, a mercenary warrior who finds himself caught in a deadly conspiracy during feudal Japan.

His mission pits him against the terrifying Eight Devils of Kimon, a group of supernatural ninja assassins plotting to seize control of the Tokugawa shogunate.

When it first arrived in 1993, Ninja Scroll made a huge impression with its kinetic action sequences, mature storytelling, and incredible animation. Alongside Akira and Ghost in the Shell, the film played a major role in introducing Western audiences to adult-oriented anime and helping expand the medium's reach beyond traditional animation fans.

The film was famously cited by Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski as one of the influences behind The Matrix. Kawajiri would later collaborate with the franchise by writing and directing two segments of The Animatrix.

The popularity of Ninja Scroll also led to a larger franchise. A sequel television series debuted in 2003, followed by a 12-issue comic miniseries released in 2006 from J. Torres and Michael Chang Ting Yu.

There have been multiple attempts to continue the property over the years. Madhouse announced a new sequel project in 2008 with Kawajiri attached, but development eventually stalled. That same year, Warner Bros. revealed plans for a live-action adaptation that never materialized either.

For anime fans who grew up with Ninja Scroll, this theatrical return offers a rare opportunity to revisit one of the genre's defining action classics on the big screen. And for viewers who have somehow missed it over the last three decades, this may be the perfect time to discover why the film continues to be held in such high regard.

Tickets for the Ninja Scroll theatrical re-release are expected to go on sale in the coming weeks.
