Nintendo Acquires SRD to Aid Software Development
In early February, Microsoft announced it was acquiring Activision Blizzard and Sony announced it was buying Bungie. This left many wondering what studio Nintendo was going to buy. At the time, President Shuntaro Furukawa said that if any acquisitions were made, it would be to preserve Nintendo DNA and it looks like they’re doing just that.
According to IGN, Nintendo is acquiring their long time partner Systems Research and Development (SRD). SRD and Nintendo have worked together since 1983 with Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda being two of the products of this team up. Now, it should be noted that SRD doesn’t develop games, but rather assists other studios with their programming. The thought is that the acquisition of SRD will help improve the development efficiency for Nintendo titles as Nintendo plans to “strengthen the management base of SRD and secure the availability of software development resources for Nintendo.”
What do you hope that this will mean? Honestly, this sounds like a very natural acquisition to me. Are there any thoughts or ideas that I’m missing?
