Nintendo is Officially Moving Forward with an Animated SUPER MARIO BROS. Movie

Last year it was reported that Nintendo was in talks with Illumination Entertainment to develop an animated feature film based on the classic video game franchise Super Mario Bros. The deal has now gone through and Nintendo made the official announcement on Twitter:

Chris Meledandri is the Founder and CEO of Illumination, and Shigeru Miyamoto is the Representative Director for Fellow of Nintendo. Universal Pictures will distribute the film worldwide.

Nintendo hasn't adapted any of their properties into films since the awesomely bad 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. film with Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. That was such a terrible experience for Nintendo that they didn't allow for any more of their other properties to be adapted into films.

I hope that this time around it will be a better experience for them and they end up making a great movie. If it is a good experience for them, you can expect to see Nintendo attempt to make even more films! As much I love Super Mario Bros., I kinda wish they would have started with The Legend of Zelda. I'd be much more interested in that film! It'll eventually happen, though.

Are you excited to hear that Nintendo is getting back into the movie business?
