Nintendo of America’s New President Delivers an Inspiring First Message to Developers

Nintendo of America has officially entered a new era, and its new president just made her first public appearance in the role with a heartfelt message aimed directly at game creators.

Devon Pritchard stepped into the spotlight at the New York Game Awards, offering encouragement, perspective, and a reminder that creativity and persistence still sit at the core of the games industry.

Pritchard assumed the role of president of Nintendo of America on January 1, 2026, following the retirement of Doug Bowser, who led the company for six years after succeeding Reggie Fils-Aime. Bowser’s debut famously involved a playful E3 appearance alongside Mario’s nemesis. Pritchard’s introduction was far more understated, but it carried weight in a different way.

Her message was shared during the New York Game Awards ceremony, where Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 picked up yet another Game of the Year award. Fils-Aime, serving as a co-host, introduced a recorded message from Pritchard that marked her first official address since taking the reins.

“Before anything else, I want to celebrate the New York Game Awards,” Pritchard said, praising “15 years of supporting the games industry, and in doing so, lifting up the voices, stories, and dreams of so many.”

She went on to describe the event as something that “connects people who are united by a shared belief that every dream matters, and that everyone deserves a chance to do meaningful and creative work in games and storytelling.”

Pritchard also highlighted the work of the New York Videogame Critics Circle, specifically calling out its educational outreach. She gave a special nod to the Playing With Purpose program, saying it “supports the creators, the coders, the writers, and anyone else dreaming big to join this community and bring all that makes them unique.”

The heart of her appearance came at the end, when she addressed developers directly, whether they’re already in the industry or still trying to break in.

“Like any good video game character, you're on an adventure, and every step you take matters. There are some gnarly bosses, sure, but also many good friends along the way who will support you, and powerful rewards for those who persevere. So keep believing, keep playing, and know that you truly belong in this game.”

This is a sincere debut from a president who has been with Nintendo of America since 2006. Pritchard chose to spotlight the people who actually make games, and the community that helps them get there. For developers watching, it was a clear signal that Nintendo’s leadership is paying attention to where the industry’s heart still beats.
