Now You Can Learn Klingon Online For Free

Klingon has been a language since Star Trek: The Motion Picture was released in 1979. It then grew and The Klingon Dictionary was released in 1985 and Trekkies could start learning how to speak the language of the proud warrior race. It’s one of those languages that a lot of geeks want to learn, but few are able to dedicate their time to it. If you are one of those geeks (like myself), there is hope for you yet. Duolingo is a popular app that helps people learn many languages such as Spanish, German, Russian, and Gaelic and it has recently added Klingon courses. The Klingon course has been in development for roughly 3 years according to io9.

Duolingo is 100% free and can be done via a browser, Android app, or iOS app. Duolingo makes the bold claim that all you need is 5 minutes a day to learn Klingon and reports that, “[a] study has shown that 34 hours of Duolingo are equal to 1 university semester of language courses.” That is a very bold claim. However, at the price of free, it’s hard to not want to give it a try. If it’s true that you only need 5 minutes a day, this could lead to a surge in Klingon speakers.

Want to meet fellow Klingon speakers? Duolingo is also offering meetups for users with the first one taking place in Chicago on March 22.
