Numbers Show Less People Are Going To The Movies In U.S. And Canada, But More People Are Going Worldwide

For the first time since 1992, Americans and Canadians are going to the movies less than they ever have before. While that's not great news for films tailored to those two nations, films with an international appeal should be fine as worldwide movie going is at a record high. While The Verge reports there was a 5.8% drop in moviegoing in the U.S. and Canada, worldwide sales experienced a 3% increase. On an international scale that means films grossed about $40 billion this year total.

As for why Americans and Canadians watched less movies in theaters in 2017, streaming and the Summer selection share the blame. With films like The Mummy and Baywatch polishing out this summer's moviegoing choices, filmgoers were giving a hard pass during the summer months. Another factor was the rise of ticket prices, even though services like Moviepass popped up to try and balance that.

I can certainly say I saw less films this year than I have in years past, can you say the same?
