OBI-WAN KENOBI Series Director Deborah Chow Talks About Surprises in Store for Fans as Well as the Possibility of a Second Season
Fans are really looking forward to the return of Ewan McGregor in the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi. The actor is reprising his role, bridging the gap in the stories between Star Wars films 3 and 4. The series begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith “where he faced his greatest defeat, the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker turned evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.”
This is a world that Star Wars experts know quite well, but it is set in a time that hasn’t really been explored on the screen before. So while we know we will see Obi-Wan, as well as Hayden Christensen back as Darth Vader, and returning stars Joel Edgerton as Owen Lars and Bonnie Piesse as Beru Lars, we will also see newcomers to the universe, including Rupert Friend as Grand Inquisitor, Kumail Nanjiani, Maya Erskine, Benny Safdie, Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, O’Shea Jackson, Moses Ingram, and more. But will we see other familiar faces?
In a recent interview with Total Film, the show’s director, Deborah Chow teased:
"Obi-Wan’s going on a journey. There’s going to be different people that come into his life. One of the things I was trying to do with this series was to have the legacy, and who is important in Obi-Wan’s life, and to also have some new characters. So it’s going to be a mixture of the two. But I do think there are some surprises to come. I hope."
Of course she can’t get into specifics, but it’s exciting to hear that she has some surprises up her sleeve. The six-part Obi-Wan story was envisioned as a limited series, and Chow confirmed that the idea of a second season was not a priority when filming:
"We really did conceive this like a beginning, middle, and end. It is one big story, and it was always meant to be. You can never tell what happens in the future. But, if another series were to happen, it would be the same process of making sure that there was a real story to tell. Ours is obviously very connected to the prequels, but I love the idea that there can be more stories that are all over the timeline."
It’s good to know that the people running the Star Wars shows at Disney+ aren’t in the business of just pumping out material for the sake of it. They really are storytellers that are looking to further the characters and take us on new adventures.
The first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on Disney+ on Friday, May 27, with subsequent episodes premiering on Wednesdays.
