OBSESSION Director Curry Barker Releases Creepy New Horror Short MAMA BEAR Just in Time for Halloween
If you're looking for a quick Halloween scare, Curry Barker has something freaky for you to enjoy. The filmmaker behind Obsession has released a new horror short titled Mama Bear, and it packs a pretty disturbing little nightmare into just five minutes.
Barker has come a long way from making videos on YouTube, becoming one of the more exciting up-and-coming voices in horror. But despite his growing Hollywood career, he clearly hasn't forgotten where he got his start.
His latest short brings him right back to the platform, delivering a bizarre and unsettling experience that leaves you wondering what the hell you just watched.
The story follows Floyd, played by Jon Lee Richardson, a house cleaner who appears to have fallen asleep while working. He's jolted awake by a strange phone call that quickly turns his day into something horrifying.
At first, it almost seems like someone is messing with him. But when Floyd checks his voicemail, he's greeted by a message filled with unintelligible screaming. Then his phone suddenly dies, and things get a whole lot worse.
That's about all you need to know before watching because half the fun is trying to figure out what's happening.
The short also features Katie Sarife as Lacey, a woman carrying a gun who has a pretty intense reaction to Floyd, or possibly someone who looks exactly like him. What happened between these characters? Who exactly is Mama Bear? What the hell is going on?
Barker doesn't offer easy answers, which makes the whole thing even creepier. You're thrown into this increasingly insane situation with almost no context, and the confusion becomes part of the horror.
Meanwhile, Barker's next feature film is the horror comedy Anything but Ghosts, which is scheduled to hit theaters on May 7, 2027. Barker will also star in the movie alongside Violet McGraw, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Aaron Paul.
It's great to see Barker continuing to play around with short-form horror while his feature film career takes off. If Mama Bear is any indication, he's still having a blast coming up with strange ways to freak people out.
Check out Mama Bear for yourself! It's only five minutes long, and it's a fun little horror treat.
