OBSESSION Director Curry Barker Reveals Nikki’s Bleak Fate After the Film’s Shocking Ending

Obsession has become the horror movie everyone is talking about. What started as a scrappy low-budget supernatural thriller has exploded into a global phenomenon, pulling in massive box office numbers and turning filmmaker Curry Barker into one of the genre’s hottest new filmmakers.

The film leaves audiences with plenty to think about after it ends, especially when it comes to Nikki, awesomely played by Inde Navarrette. She survives the events of the movie, but according to Barker, making it out alive doesn’t mean she gets a happy ending.

Speaking with CinemaBlend, Barker revealed what he believes happens to Nikki after the story concludes:

"She probably goes to jail. She's probably going to prison for a very long time. There's also, like, a billion dollars in Ian's house, and Ian's dead on the floor.

“She's connected to that money in some way. Who knows what the cops are gonna put together as the story? She's not gonna have a very good life, I don't think. It's very sad."

For anyone who has seen Obsession, that assessment tracks. The story centers on Bear, played by Michael Johnson, who makes a catastrophic decision when he breaks a supernatural One Wish Willow in hopes of making Nikki fall in love with him.

The wish works, but the consequences spiral into something horrifying. By the film’s conclusion, Bear takes his own life, which finally breaks the spell and frees Nikki.

The problem is that freedom comes with a nightmare waiting on the other side.

When the dust settles, there are multiple deaths to account for. Bear is dead. Nikki’s friend and co-worker Ian, played by Cooper Tomlinson, is dead. There’s also a staggering $1 billion sitting in Ian’s house.

Nikki finds herself standing in the middle of a crime scene that no police officer, detective, prosecutor, or jury could ever make sense of.

How exactly does someone explain a cursed tree branch that granted a supernatural wish? They can’t. That’s what makes Barker’s explanation so fascinating.

Even though Obsession features paranormal elements, the world itself feels grounded in reality. The supernatural horror exists within a setting that operates according to normal rules.

From that perspective, Nikki’s future seems grim. Authorities would almost certainly focus their attention on the blood-covered survivor surrounded by bodies and unexplained money.

In other words, surviving the curse may have only been the beginning of her suffering. The revelation also raises questions about a possible Obsession sequel. If Nikki is facing prison time and a shattered life, where does the story go next?

There are plenty of possibilities. One route could mirror what Smile 2 did by shifting focus away from the original protagonist and following a completely new set of characters. After all, there’s no reason another person couldn’t stumble across a One Wish Willow and unleash a fresh wave of supernatural chaos.

At the moment, though, Barker is focused on other projects. The filmmaker has already completed production on his upcoming horror-comedy Anything but Ghosts, and he’s also attached to direct the next installment of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise for A24.

With those projects on his plate, any return to the world of Obsession likely isn’t happening anytime soon. Still, it’s easy to understand why sequel conversations are already happening.

Obsession has become the highest-grossing horror movie of 2026, earning more than $210 million worldwide and continuing to climb. The film’s success has reportedly opened major doors for Barker, including lucrative offers for future projects before he’s even officially pitched them.

That’s a remarkable turnaround for the filmmaker. Unfortunately for Nikki, things aren’t looking nearly as promising. While Barker’s career is soaring, his movie’s most important character appears destined for prison, punished for a series of horrific events she had no control over.
