Odin's Fate in THOR: RAGNAROK Revealed

As Marvel Studios blasts forward into Phase Three, the company is nearly finished wrapping up all of the standalone trilogies it started years ago. Iron Man 3 has already come and gone, Captain America: Civil War is next up, and the final trilogy entry of the original Avengers is Thor: Ragnarok, which we've been hearing a lot of information about recently.

Cate Blanchett is in talks to play a villain, and we know Mark Ruffalo's Hulk will pop up in the movie alongside Chris Hemsworth's Thor. But what about Anthony Hopkins' Odin? At the end of Thor: The Dark World, Loki disguised himself as Odin and, as far as we know, Loki still sits on the throne of Asgard and rules in his stead. What happened to the real Odin, though? Geek.com has found out how Odin will factor into the plot of Thor: Ragnarok, so if you don't want to be spoiled, turn back now.

It’s near impossible to kill Odin, and the best time to try is while he’s in his Odinsleep (a sort of meditation used to recharge the Odinforce, a powerful magic possessed by the ruler of Asgard). When Loki replaced him, Odin wasn’t in his magical slumber. As much as Loki might want to kill Odin, he didn’t — or, at least, can’t — just yet. Whatever did happen, Odin has fled Asgard for Midgard, where he wanders the Earth as one of those crazy-looking “the end is nigh” street-corner hobos, warning of the impending apocalypse (American for Ragnarok).

This could go a couple of different ways: seeing Odin like this could be sad and disheartening, or they could play it for laughs. Since Marvel brought in Flight of the Conchords director Taika Waititi to direct, and the filmmakers have talked about wanting to make these movies funnier, I'm guessing it's going to be played for laughs. Anthony Hopkins decked out as an Earth-bound hobo should be kind of funny, especially considering how Shakespearean and powerful he was in the first film. Kevin Feige has said that very little of this movie is going to take place on Earth, so I wouldn't be surprised if Thor helps Odin return to Asgard and fight in the ultimate apocalyptic battle that serves as the end of that world as we know it.
