Olivia Colman and John Lithgow Reunite Generations in the Trailer for JIMPA

Kino Lorber has released the full US trailer for Jimpa, an intimate and emotionally grounded indie drama from Australian filmmaker Sophie Hyde. The film made its debut at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and is finally heading to US theaters this February.

Mixed reactions followed its premiere, but it’s a warm, thoughtful story about family, identity, and the complicated narratives we build around the people we love.

The film stars Olivia Colman as Hannah, a mother traveling to Amsterdam with her non-binary teenage child Frances, played by Aud Mason-Hyde. Their trip is meant to reconnect with Hannah’s estranged father, affectionately known as Jimpa, portrayed by John Lithgow.

Jimpa is proudly gay, politically outspoken, and living a vibrant life abroad. Frances is immediately drawn to him and soon announces they want to stay in Amsterdam with their grandfather for a full year, a decision that deeply rattles Hannah.

What begins as a tense family visit slowly reveals deeper fractures. Jimpa’s fierce independence is challenged when his declining health comes to light, throwing Frances’ plans into uncertainty and pulling Hannah’s sister into the situation from the UK. As the siblings try to figure out what comes next, Hannah is forced to confront long-held beliefs, unresolved memories, and the stories she’s told herself about her family.

The trailer captures the film’s gentle humor and emotional openness. One line that sums up the heart of the story comes straight from the film’s description: “With warmth, humour and joy, Jimpa reminds us that, in every family, there are stories that don't add up.”

Jimpa in set to hit select US theaters on February 6th, 2026.
