Olivia Colman Stars in Haunting Trailer for Maggie Gyllenhaal's Directorial Debut THE LOST DAUGHTER
A haunting trailer has been released for the drama The Lost Daughter, starring Oscar-winner Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Ed Harris, Peter Sarsgaard, Paul Mescal, Dagmara Dominczyk, Alba Rohrwacher, Jack Farthing, and Oliver Jackson-Cohen, as well as Panos Koronis, Robyn Elwell, Ellie Blake, and Athena Martin. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Here’s the synopsis:
Alone on a seaside vacation, Leda (Olivia Colman) becomes consumed with a young mother and daughter as she watches them on the beach. Unnerved by their compelling relationship, (and their raucous and menacing extended family), Leda is overwhelmed by her own memories of the terror, confusion and intensity of early motherhood. An impulsive act shocks Leda into the strange and ominous world of her own mind, where she is forced to face the unconventional choices she made as a young mother and their consequences.
This looks like an interesting film, but very heavy. The acting is top-notch, but I’m worried about the subject matter. While I can relate to stories that delve into the woes of parenting, I have a hard time with the heaviness of child-loss or violence against a child. Check out the trailer below, and let us know what you think.
The Lost Daughter arrives in select theaters on December 17th, 2021, and on Netflix on December 31st.
