Last month, we reported that Olivia Wilde would be taking the director’s seat again after her directorial debut with last year’s Booksmart. This time, she is taking on a new story in the Marvel/Sony universe, which is not yet confirmed, but fans are thinking it will be the story of Spider-Woman. In a recent interview with EW, Wilde talked about the excitement she feels stepping into this world, and even teased MCU President Kevin Feige’s involvement:

All I can say is that this is by far the most exciting thing that’s happened to me because not only do I get to tell a story that…. listen to me, trying to avoid Kevin Feige’s pellet gun,” Wilde said. “We are seeing this incredible influx of female directors and storytellers getting to take hold of this genre, this super hero space, and infuse it with their own perspective. Not only do I get to tell the story as a director but I get to develop the story and that was what made it so incredible for me. I get to do it with thee aforementioned Katie Silverman, who, she and I love to do all sorts of things together but our love started with Booksmart. To know that we went from telling a story about female friendship in high school to this other stratosphere now is just super exciting.

No kidding! This is such a great opportunity for any filmmaker, but it still feels like new territory for female filmmakers who are relatively new to the genre. Wilde said as much when she added:

“I'm just honored to be amongst this wave of women who are showing up and saying 'we are not only going to step in and try and tell this story like men do, we're actually going to reframe the stories themselves,'" she said. "And the industry is, as far as I can tell, really supportive of that. There is a sea change and it's because of these decades of trailblazers who demanded this over and over and over again and it's finally broken through and I'm very fortunate to be there with it.”

If it does turn out that Spider-Woman is the film she takes on, she has plenty of source material and characters to work with. It’s really exciting to see the Spider-Man universe building out with these upcoming movies! What are you hoping to see from Wilde’s Marvel outing?
