One Disney Executive Says the Acquisition of Fox is Almost Done
Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox has been mostly smooth sailing, but it has hit some snags lately. Notably in Brazil and Mexico. Those don’t seem to be concerning Kevin Mayer though. Mayer is the chairman of direct-to-consumer and international offers and he recently told THR that the deal is almost complete.
“The deal closing keeps me up at night, but it is almost done and closed. I’m eager to execute. I’m eager to get these services out in the public’s hands. That is an excitement more than it is a nervousness.”
This is good news for some, but I have my concerns. This gives Disney an even bigger portion of the market which means less competition driving content. This will inevitably lead to less original content than we already have (which is arguably very low) and lower quality. However, some pluses are the possibility of getting the original, unaltered versions of the original Star Wars trilogy on Blu-ray as well as the introduction of the X-Men, Deadpool, and the Fantastic Four into the MCU. I’m sure the deal will close in the first half of 2019 as Disney works to overcome the hurdles they’re encountering.
