One Moment in the Gut-Wrenching Finale of THE BEAR Season 2 Wasn't in the Original Script
The series The Bear is one of the best shows on TV right now. It just wrapped its second season, and fans are talking about the two episodes this season that felt like a punch to the gut! The first being the flashback episode, “Fishes,” which boasted an incredible guest cast, and the finale episode, “The Bear,” which finally saw the characters opening the restaurant to their friends and family.
There were triumphs and heartbreaks all along the way, as always with this series, and one particularly gut-wrenching scene in the final moments of the show almost wasn’t in the episode at all. But if you haven’t finish season 2, be warned there are spoilers ahead.
In a recent interview with THR, Molly Gordon, who plays the love interest to Jeremy Allen White's chef Carmy in season 2, opened up about the scene in which she goes to Carmy after hearing he is locked in the walk-in.
“When I first read episode 10 [the finale], the voicemail was never going to be in it. As I joined the season, Chris and Jeremy and I were talking through things. Jeremy and I had a connection — he’s such a wonderful person and so available as an actor and a beautiful scene partner — and what I think happened is that Chris wanted to make that part more meaningful and add more to the episode. It was heartbreaking for me, acting in the walk-in scene, knowing that Jeremy hadn’t heard that voicemail, knowing he would be listening to it while trapped in a refrigerator.”
When asked if she filmed the scene alone, up against a closed door, she shared:
“Jeremy stayed around for that. He was shooting his side of things inside the refrigerator a couple days later, but he came to be on the other side to say those lines with me. I’m a woman who has gone through a couple breakups, so it felt both cathartic and sad. To hear someone way that they don’t deserve happiness, or deserve to give happiness, is a horrific statement.”
The show really does know how to break your heart in every way. The characters have so many layers and levels of hurt and damage from their pasts. It will be so good to hopefully see them grow and catch a break in future seasons. I can’t wait to see this series continue so we can see where everyone ends up, and hopefully see some peace come to Carmy and the rest of the Bear family.
