ONE NIGHT ONLY Featurette Teases a Charming, Romantic Comedy That Looks Like a Perfect Summer Escape
What if the most chaotic night of your life ended up leading you to the person you were always meant to meet? That's the fun premise at the heart of One Night Only, the upcoming romantic comedy from Will Gluck, and a newly released inside look featurette offers another charming preview of what's in store.
Gluck has already delivered crowd-pleasing rom-coms like Anyone But You and Easy A, and this latest project looks like it's aiming to bring that same mix of humor, heart, and irresistible chemistry back to theaters.
After checking out the latest footage, I'm even more excited to see how this story comes together. It looks funny, sweet, and packed with the kind of romantic misadventures that make for a great date-night movie.
The film stars Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown, Top Gun: Maverick) and Callum Turner (Masters of the Air, Fantastic Beasts) as Allie and Owen, two lonely strangers whose paths cross in a slightly fictionalized version of New York City during the one night each year when single people are allowed to have sex.
While everyone else seems focused on one thing, Owen has just been dumped and Allie is still holding onto hope that real love exists. When they unexpectedly meet, there's an instant connection between them.
Unfortunately, the night refuses to make things easy. A string of bad timing, unexpected detours, and plenty of side quests continually pull them apart as they race across the city, sometimes toward each other and sometimes away from each other. Along the way, they may discover that what they've been searching for has been right in front of them all along.
It's a story that feels fresh while still embracing everything that makes romantic comedies so much fun. The chemistry between Barbaro and Turner already looks fantastic, and the movie seems to balance heartfelt romance with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments.
The supporting cast includes Maya Hawke (Stranger Things), Julia Fox (Uncut Gems), indie pop artist King Princess (Nine Perfect Strangers), Ben Marshall (SNL), Ziwe (Baited with Ziwe), Ella Loudon (Can't Let it Go), along with screen legends Molly Ringwald and LeVar Burton.
One Night Only is directed and produced by Will Gluck from a screenplay by Travis Braun. The featurette does exactly what a good preview should do. It offers a glimpse at the cast's chemistry, the playful energy of the story, and the romantic atmosphere without giving away too much.
Between the charming characters, the colorful New York setting, and Gluck's track record with modern romantic comedies, this has all the ingredients to become one of the summer's most enjoyable feel-good movies.
I'm actually looking forward to seeing this one. Romantic comedies have been making a welcome comeback over the last few years, and One Night Only looks like another fun addition to that resurgence.
The movie hits theaters on August 7th.
