ONWARD Takes the Box Office on Opening Weekend, Despite Having Lowest Pixar Numbers Since THE GOOD DINOSAUR
I was able to see Disney/Pixar’s Onward at a special screening a week ahead of its release. My husband, kids, and I loved it so much that we went back on opening weekend to see it again at the drive-in. Everyone I’ve talked to that has seen it enjoyed it as well, so it’s no surprise to me that it had the best numbers of any movie on its opening weekend. But it is surprising that even with taking that title, it was the poorest opening weekend for a Pixar film since the 2015 film The Good Dinosaur.
The film’s numbers are also slacking in the foreign markets, but speculation points to the fact that the opening happened in conjuncture with the closing of Chinese theaters due to the novel coronavirus. Not all media sources believe that’s the culprit, but that makes sense to me.
I think this will all turn around for the film, though. Word will get out that it’s a great movie, and numbers will pick up. I loved this movie so much. It was a beautiful story of family and bravery, adventure, and love.
Have you seen Onward yet? If so, what did you think?
