OPPENHEIMER and BARBIE Have an Awesome Opening Box Office Weekend! Here Are the Numbers!
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer were released in theaters this past weekend and they both delivered great box office numbers! Barbie exploded with $337 million worldwide opening and Oppenheimer made $174 million worldwide.
Both movies are great, but we always knew that Barbie was going to be the bigger box office draw because it’s Barbie and it’s a film that is interesting to a wider range of people. It made more money than The Flash and Fast X. Oppenheimer is a three-hour R-rated historical drama, and the fact it made as much as it did is impressive. While it won’t make as much as Barbie, it will end up winning a bunch of awards. But, Barbie might get a few of those as well.
In regards to the “Barbieheimer” box office numbers this weekend, Michael O’Leary, President & CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners said:
“This was a phenomenal experience for people who love movies on the big screen. It was a truly historic weekend and continues the positive box office momentum of 2023. More importantly, it proves once again that America loves going to the movies to see great films. People recognized that something special was happening and they wanted to be a part of it. Our partners in the creative community and at the studios gave audiences two uniquely different, smart and original stories that were meant for the big screen and movie lovers responded by gathering friends and family and heading to their local movie houses across the nation. The men and women who operate our theatres also responded by creating promotions and unique events to further enhance the moviegoing experience for enthusiastic movie lovers. This weekend is a shining example of how there is simply no substitute for seeing a motion picture in the cinema.”
I love that two big movies opened up at the same time this weekend. Back in the day, this was a normal thing! There used to be good movies released in theaters on the same day all the time when I was growing up! I loved those days! The days when there were so many good movie options in theaters. I used to do double features all the time!
Times have changed, though. Now, studios don’t like releasing big films up against each other and they spread out the releases. I would love for more of these kinds of films released on the same weekend! It’s always nice to have lots of great movie options in theaters! I think that actually helps fuel the box office and gets people to theaters.
Did you enjoy these films!?
