Oscar Winners and Memorable Moments From the 93rd Academy Awards

Last night, the 93rd Academy Awards show was held at Union Station in Los Angeles, California. The program was kicked off by Regina King, who made her directorial debut last year with the great film One Night in Miami… King opened the ceremony gracefully and set the stage, noting that this was a difficult year for everyone, but it was a love of movies that helped so many of us through it. The whole program highlighted the participants’ favorite films, and many talked about their first movie-going experiences as kids.

One that stood out most was Minari star Steven Yeun talking about going to see Terminator 2 in the theater with his mom when he was seven. He said neither of them knew anything about it, but his mom played it cool like she meant to take him to the R-rated flick, and he was amazed abythe film. I loved this because I was also a seven year old in the theater seeing this movie, and it was a very cool movie for me to experience as well.

My two favorite moments in the awards were the Name That Tune segment, in which Lil Rel Howery and Questlove chose audience members to decide if a song was an Oscar-winner, Oscar-nominated, or snubbed, resulting in Glenn Close revealing her music history knowledge and doing a dance called “Da Butt.” Next up was the beautiful speech given by Tyler Perry upon accepting the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. His words were touching and moved me to tears, and got the whole audience up on their feet.

I’ll include videos of each of these moments below, as well as the Instagram post put out by Anthony Hopkins today after his win for best actor in the film The Father. The actor did not attend the ceremony, but gave his speech today and paid tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, who was nominated in the category for his work on Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

I loved the Oscars this year. They always get bad reviews, but I watch every year, and I always enjoy seeing the stars, hearing the jokes, and seeing who won each award. Check out the winners and moments below, and let us know what your favorite Oscars moment was this year.
