Our List of Favorite Video Games of 2022
It’s the end of the year and everyone is making their lists of favorite games from this past year. The Game Awards already crowned many games as winners across various categories including Splatoon 3 as the Best Multiplayer game and Elden Ring as Game of the Year (shocker, I know). However, different people have different preferences for games and so we here at GeekTyrant will be sharing some of our favorite games from 2022. Let us know your favorite games from the year in the comments below.

Cult of the Lamb - Favorite Roguelike/Town Management
Developer: Massive Monster
Publisher: Devolver Digital
When I saw the trailers for Cult of the Lamb, it looked like a huge joke and that its whole thing was going to just be a meme machine or something. I wasn’t expecting much. Thankfully, while the game is very comedic in various ways, it is exceptionally well-crafted. The gameplay is absolutely incredible and feels great to play. Whether you’re busy making sure your Followers don’t try to abandon your cult or out slaying false prophets and gods, the game is just fun. I would highly recommend grabbing a copy for yourself at your earliest convenience and it’s on all the major platforms, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4/5, and Xbox (affiliate link). Physical copies are available from select retailers including GameStop (affiliate link).
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge - Favorite Cooperative Game
Developer: Tribute Games
Publisher: Dotemu
I didn’t grow up going to arcades very often. Any chance I did have to be at an arcade though, there was almost always one game in particular that I wanted to play: whatever Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game they had. I loved the fact that up to four people could play. TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge takes that same formula and feel and brings it into the modern era. You can have up to 6 players at once as you play a really fun side-scrolling beat ‘em up. The art is fantastic as well and really takes it up to the next level. You can play this game on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4/5, and Xbox (affiliate link). Physical copies are available at your favorite retailers as well including GameStop (affiliate link).
Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons - Favorite Overall
Developer: ArenaNet
Publisher: NCSoft
Guild Wars 2 is my favorite video game and so of course its latest expansion was going to make my list. End of Dragons brought back the land of Cantha and made it everything I dreamed it could be way back in Guild Wars: Factions! I remember being so excited to get Factions back in the day and at first I was loving it, but then Cantha just felt bland and boring. End of Dragons breathed new life into the East Asian-inspired land with more color, more life, and a better story than Factions. I love how a reason was given why we didn’t have access to Cantha from the start of the game and why Cantha wasn’t helping out when the entire world was in trouble. They had taken a very strong stance of isolationism. I personally really liked the way the stories unfolded in End of Dragons and we also got visual upgrades thanks to the DirectX11 update released not too long before and we got actual cutscenes instead of just talking heads! I love it all! Plus, I now have a Jade Bot that is very cute and very handy as well as a boat. No complaints. You can play Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons now on PC.

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen - Favorite Overall
Developer: Bungie
Publisher: Bungie
When it comes to expansions, I don’t know if I’ve enjoyed anything else as much as The Witch Queen. Between a revamp to an ability system, a demanding and engaging campaign, weapon crafting, and a seriously intense raid, this expansion delivered a lot to love. I’ve been in the heart of this franchise for five years and I haven’t been so consistently engaged in any game ever. I am almost hitting a 2.5 hour average per a day in Destiny and I don’t know if I’ll ever stop. This was Bungie showing the gaming world that they can make characters and campaigns that excel in gameplay as much as story just like they did with the Halo games.
Marvel SNAP - Favorite Time Killer
Developer: Nuverse
Publisher: Nuverse
I am a huge card game person. From Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon at a young age to almost daily Hearthstone for the last seven years, I have played a lot of card games. When I first saw Marvel SNAP, I thought it would be a simple cash grab with loot boxes (card packs) and little depth. But having Ben Brode (one of the original designers for Hearthstone) being one of main designers adds a lot of love and smart game design to the game. I downloaded it out of boredom, but now I am playing at least an hour a day and my wife is probably just as addicted to the game as I am. The gameplay is smart, simple and not about power, but about outsmarting your enemy. Along with the snappy gameplay, the progression for unlocking cards is about as un-predatory as it possibly can be. I actually don’t know how they are making money because it is so easy to unlock the cards. Either way, this game has a lot of potential and offers a low barrier to entry, high mastery, and impressive replayability.

River City Girls 2 - Favorite Game This Year
Developer: WayForward
Publisher: WayForward, Arc System Works
I loved the first River City Girls. The music is phenomenal, the voice acting and writing is fantastic, and the game play itself is really fun. It’s hard to follow up with a sequel to a great game like that, but River City Girls 2 has knocked it out of the park. I haven’t finished the game yet, but I am loving every minute of it. Even though it is a sequel with a similar game play, it feels fresh and new still. The composer made another great soundtrack and the writers had a lot of fun throwing in some fun meta humor with the excellent writing. The voice acting in this game will make you wish that more games could have this level of voice work. It has proven itself a fantastic addition to a great series.
The Dragoness: Command of the Flame - Favorite Nostalgia Inducing Game
Developer: Crazy Goat Games
Publisher: PQube
This game brought back all the feelings of playing Heroes of Might and Magic III for me. A lot of the game play is similar between the two games, but The Dragoness brings a few new elements to the style. Each scenario you get to choose from new game bonuses and you get to unlock more as the game progresses. You also build up one town that operates as your main base so each game in the campaign you are not rebuilding the same buildings every time. The graphics were good and the monster designs were cool. While it has a few drawbacks, overall the game is a lot of fun.
