Outstanding Overwatch Art and Interview From Artist StormBeast
If it exists, there is probably fan art of it. But today, we are treated with some seriously exquisite and unique art from StormBeast. He is a young artist from Pakistan with a real knack for making great character art pieces that capture the personality and vibes of the heroes of Overwatch. Between pointillism pieces with 38,000 dots, Galaxy themed watercolor paintings and Renaissance themed portraits, the amount of talent and creativity is palpable. We had the opportunity to have a quick interview to learn about the man holding the brush and pen.
What brought you to Overwatch?
I used to play Fortnite with a group of really good friends who I've been together with for over 3 years (Love you all if you're reading this <3). We were all pretty burned out and decided to try a new game, and luckily Overwatch was something we all felt we'd enjoy. So, we all bought it and started grinding!
Which heroes do you main in Overwatch?
For the most part, I’m a flex DPS and main McCree, Genji, and Ashe. But I also queue for tank and support sometimes if my friends want to queue DPS in my place.
Why did you make Overwatch the focus of your art?
I've made art since I was a kid, and when I joined the Overwatch community, I was astounded by the sheer amount of talent everyone had in terms of fan art. So, I decided to join the gang and see what I could make! Renaissance Overwatch was the first series I made, and the amazing response to the series motivated me to make more.
Are there any heroes that you want to do in pointillism, but seem too daunting or difficult?
The hardest part about Pointillism is making hair. Since you have to work with only dots, it can become annoying to try to replicate strands of hair with just that, so I feel like Ashe, Dva and Widowmaker would be hard heroes to make. I will still be trying to make them though!
How did you get into pointillism?
I sometimes browse Pinterest for inspiration and series ideas. A few years ago I saw an amazing tattoo design of Heath Ledger's Joker. I don't remember the artist, but I was amazed at how it looked and decided to try it out myself! Needless to say, the first attempts were absolute garbage, but as I made more, they got better and better in terms of quality, and here we are today!
How much of your pieces are hand-drawn or edited on the computer?
All the pieces on my Twitter/Instagram are entirely hand made and not edited at all, aside from minor Brightness/Contrast adjustments, but who calls that editing nowadays? Most of the pictures in the Pointillism series are high quality scans, which may be the reason why some people think they look digital.
Do you want to make art of any other franchises or characters? If so, which one/s?
I actually do! There are a few franchises I want to get into, but I feel like they'd be overwhelming for me. One of them is, of course, League of Legends. I've never been a fan of MOBA games, but I love the overall character designs of the legends and how artists interpret them in their own style. Who knows? Maybe I'll try it out soon!
Check out his store here! His Twitter and Instagram are great places to follow him, he posts his latest pieces there and they are always incredible.
