Paramount+ Developing Series Adaptations of 80s Classic Movies URBAN COWBOY and FLASHDANCE as Well as a Few Other Projects
Paramount+ has revealed that they are moving forward with series adaptations of two classic 80s movies - Urban Cowboy and Flashdance. Urban Cowboy is based on the 1980 film starring John Travolta and Debra Winger, and it’s reported that the series will go deeper into Bud’s journey from farm to the big city in 1980s Houston, and it will feature iconic music from that era. James Pondsoldt (The Spectacular Now, Sorry For Your Loss) is directing and co-writing the series with Benjamin Percy (Wolverine).
Flashdance is based on the 1983 film starring Jennifer Beals, which followed a young Pittsburgh woman with two jobs, as a welder and an exotic dancer, who wants to get into ballet school. Dear White People creator Justin Simien is set to write and direct.
Paramount+ is also developing Guru Nation, a modern-day, half-hour docu-style comedy from Bob Odenkirk, David Cross and Bill Odenkirk. Along with co-creating the series, Bob Odenkirk and Cross are set to star as rival cult gurus manipulating the minds of their deluded followers.
These three projects are in development alongside Paramount Plus’ revival of Frasier, which follows the next chapter of Frasier Crane’s story with Kelsey Grammer starring and executive producing.
The streamer also revealed the title of its upcoming espionage drama series, Rabbit Hole, starring Kiefer Sutherland. The series finds private espionage operative James Weir (Sutherland) in the midst of a battle over the preservation of democracy in a world at odds with misinformation, behavioral manipulation, the surveillance state and the interests that control these extraordinary powers.
This sounds like a pretty solid lineup of new content coming to Paramount+. Which shows are you interested in checking out?
