Patty Jenkins Talks Casting Kristen Wiig as Cheetah in WONDER WOMAN 1984
We have all gotten to see the first trailer for the upcoming sequel Wonder Woman 1984, the second Wonder Woman film from director Patty Jenkins, starring Gal Gadot as the Amazonian princess. The trailer sees the return of Chris Pine as Steve Trevor and introduces Kristen Wiig as Barbara Minerva, aka Cheetah.
Some fans were surprised at the casting choice of Wiig, but I think most are just waiting to see how it turns out. In response to questions about deciding to cast Wiig in the villainous role, Jenkins told fans at CCXP this past weekend:
We were super fans of Kristen, and we love how funny she is, but also I've been a huge admirer of what a great actress she is for a long time. So when we needed someone to go all the way from one end of the spectrum of being funny, sweet Diana's friend, all the way to a totally different place, we knew that Kristen Wiig would kill it, and she went beyond our wildest dreams.
I agree. I love Wiig, and I think she’s a fantastic actress. She was really intriguing in the trailer, and I can’t wait to see her evolve into Cheetah. No one has seen Wiig in full costume yet, but Jenkins did comment on her appearance in the film, and how they went about pulling it off:
We tried to do as much as we could practically, and we pulled off most of it.
That sounds about right. That seems like the standard these days, and what is most well-received by fans. It’s better to be as realistic as possible, then brought all the way to a finished product with CGI finishing touches. I am so excited for this movie! What do you think of the trailer? Are you more confident in Wiig in the role now?
