Paul Bettany Addresses Lord Voldemort Casting Rumors For HBO’s HARRY POTTER Series

Rumors have been spreading online about who might step into the robes of Lord Voldemort for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series, and one name that recently started making the rounds is Paul Bettany. He’s definitly a great actor who would be great in the role of the iconic Dark Wizard.

As it turns out, Bettany says the rumor is news to him. While he’s happy to talk about his love for the wizarding world, he hasn’t actually heard anything from HBO about the role.

During a recent interview with ScreenRant, Bettany was asked directly about the rumors connecting him to Voldemort in the new adaptation of Harry Potter.

The actor made it clear he hasn’t been contacted about playing the character, even though he’d certainly be interested in the world the series is building.

“I haven’t heard anything about that. I mean, I’m a big fan of the IP and I’m a big fan of HBO, but nobody has called me up about it.”

Even though Bettany hasn’t been approached, the speculation highlights how much curiosity there is around the casting of Voldemort. The character doesn’t appear heavily in the early parts of J.K. Rowling’s book series, but he becomes the central villain as the story progresses.

In the original film franchise, the role was famously played by Ralph Fiennes, whose chilling performance became one of the defining elements of the movies.

Bettany isn’t the only actor fans have connected to the part. Names like Cillian Murphy and Tilda Swinton have also popped up in rumor mills as HBO continues assembling the cast for the ambitious series. Murphy shut rumors about him being cast in the role down, though.

The new Harry Potter adaptation is shaping up to be a massive undertaking for HBO. The project is planned as a seven-season series that will retell Rowling’s novels with a longer format, giving each book an entire season to unfold. Production is already underway in the U.K., signaling that the studio is moving full speed ahead.

A new generation of young actors is stepping into the iconic roles at the heart of the story. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, joined by Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

They follow in the footsteps of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, who brought those characters to life in the original films.

Other familiar Hogwarts faces are also being recast. Lox Pratt will take on the role of Draco Malfoy, the rival previously played by Tom Felton.

The adult cast is starting to fill out as well, with some big names joining the magical world. John Lithgow is set to play Albus Dumbledore, while Paapa Essiedu has been confirmed as Professor Snape. Janet McTeer will portray Professor McGonagall, and Nick Frost is stepping in as the beloved half-giant Hagrid.

More students from Hogwarts have recently been announced too, including members of the Gryffindor Quidditch team. Orson Matthews will play Oliver Wood, Ethan Smith is Lee Jordan, Asha Soetan takes on Angelina Johnson, Eire Farrell plays Katie Bell, and Serrana Su-Ling Bliss will portray Alicia Spinnet.

With filming already underway and casting continuing to expand, HBO’s Harry Potter series is shaping up to be one of the biggest projects in the franchise’s history. Warner Bros. Discovery streaming chief JB Perrette has even described it as the “streaming event of the decade.”

The show is currently slated to debut in 2027 on HBO Max, assuming the platform still exists under that name by then.

As for Voldemort, the role remains one of the most intriguing mysteries surrounding the series.
