Paul Bettany Reveals the Marvel Performance He Believes Should Have Been Nominated For an Oscar

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been established for 18 years, and is nearing a 40 film run. With hundreds of main characters and several intertwining storylines, we’ve seen performances range from forgettable to silly to powerful and deeply heartfelt.

Paul Bettany, who plays the beloved android Vision in the MCU, wishes to highlight one of the most beautiful performances in Marvel, which he finds completely underrated by the Hollywood Award circuits.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, which you can watch below, Bettany said: “I have to say that Endgame, which I am not in, so I can say this, is a fantastic movie.

“It’s a fantastic movie, and anybody who has actually made a movie knows how hard, when they watch it, that movie would have been to make. And the performance that [Robert Downey Jr.] gives is absolutely Oscar-worthy, and he should have been nominated. It’s an extraordinary performance.”

Having just rewatched Avengers: Endgame for its Encore, I totally agree that Downey’s performance was outstanding, and it’s a bummer that comic book movies don’t often get the recognition they deserve.

They’re just as valid, and the actors’ portrayals are as as good as any other film. Scarlett Johansson’s performance in that movie is also heartbreaking and poignant, and it’s too bad they weren’t recognized.

Luckily both of these actors have their share of award worthy roles, and Downey is returning to the MCU this December in the new role of Doctor Doom.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theatres on December 18, 2026.
