Pedro Pascal Was "So Appalled" by the Way He Looked in WONDER WOMAN 1984 That He Hasn't Shaved for a Role Since
Fans were disappointed with the sequel Wonder Woman 1984, as it didn’t live up to the first film’s story. But it turns out that one of its stars was disappointed as well, but more with the look of his character than anything else.
Pedro Pascal’s star was just beginning its major ascent when this movie came out, and fans were taking notice, but if you look back, you might see that Pascal has made the choice to have facial hair in his roles since this film, and that’s because the actor absolutely hated the way he looked in this movie.
In a recent interview with his Fantastic Four co-star, Vanessa Kirby, during LADbible’s “Agree to Disagree” video series, the pair were asked to debate which is sexier: Mustaches or beards? Pascal responded to the question, saying:
“I grow such shit facial hair, but if I were to shave it all off… I really look very [awful]. Strongly disagree with a clean shaven me. I was so appalled by the way I look in ‘Wonder Woman 1984.’
“I loved the movie, but I was so appalled by the way that I looked that I never have gone back unless it were completely necessary. If they asked me to be clean shave for ‘Fantastic Four’ and insisted then I would’ve done it. But it was a very collaborative creation for all of our looks in the movie.”
Pascal wears a mustache as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic in the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe tentpole, a choice that has sparked a bit of backlash amongst superhero obsessives who are committed to the clean-shaven Reed from the comic books.
Pascal, who is no stranger to franchise work thanks to The Last of Us and The Mandalorian, previously told Vanity Fair that it was hard to avoid fan complaints when he was cast and he constantly heard:
“He’s too old. He’s not right. He needs to shave. I’m more aware of disgruntlement around my casting than anything I’ve ever done,” Pascal said.
I think anyone complaining about his casting just needs to wait and see what he does with the role. Pascal is so endearing and talented, I can’t imagine his mustache will stand in the way of his fantastic portrayal.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters on July 25th.
